Pinpointing the Source of Rear Axle Whine
Identifying the Origin of the Whining Noise
The high-pitched whining noise typically stems from the differential. To verify this, activate the parking brake and run the engine while supporting the rear wheels on jack stands. Using a mechanic's stethoscope, listen to the differential case and input flange. If the noise is clearly audible in these areas, the differential is likely the culprit.
Further Diagnostic Steps
For a more comprehensive diagnosis, crawl under the vehicle and inspect the differential input flange. Grasp the flange and attempt to move it in different directions. If you feel any play, particularly in the radial or axial directions (not rotational), it indicates that the pinion bearings have lost their preload due to wear or damage.
