Epicenter Near Ridgecrest, Magnitude Estimated at 7.1

Significant Damage and Injuries Reported, State of Emergency Declared

A major earthquake has struck Southern California, causing widespread damage and injuries. The epicenter of the quake was located near the town of Ridgecrest, approximately 120 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.1, making it the largest to hit the region in nearly two decades. It was followed by several significant aftershocks, including one measuring 6.4 in magnitude.

Reports from local authorities indicate that numerous buildings have collapsed or sustained severe damage. Power outages and water main breaks have been reported throughout the affected area. Emergency services are responding to numerous calls for assistance, and search and rescue operations are underway.

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency for the counties of San Bernardino and Kern, which have been most severely impacted by the earthquake. The National Guard has been deployed to assist with response efforts, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is also providing support.

Seismologists warn that aftershocks are expected to continue for days or even weeks following the main event. Residents are advised to remain alert and prepared for additional ground shaking.
